Men's Testosterone Therapy · Maine

Testosterone Replacement, Tailored to You

Energy. Libido. Strength. Recovery. Motivation. When testosterone is truly low, the effects can show up in many areas of a man's life.

At Vital Haven Wellness, testosterone replacement therapy isn't based on symptoms or a single lab value alone. We evaluate symptoms, medical history, hormone levels, overall health, and individual risk factors to determine whether TRT is medically appropriate.

If treatment is indicated, therapy is individualized, monitored, and adjusted based on clinical response and follow-up testing. Care may include secure telehealth or select in-person visits. Learn more about how care works throughout Maine.

Common Symptoms

If this sounds familiar, it may be worth looking deeper.

  • Decreased energy or motivation
  • Reduced libido or changes in sexual function
  • Loss of muscle mass or strength
  • Increased body fat
  • Difficulty recovering from exercise
  • Changes in mood, concentration, or motivation
  • Reduced sense of overall well-being

These symptoms can have many causes, which is why proper evaluation matters before starting treatment.

What We Test

More than one testosterone number.

Diagnosing testosterone deficiency requires looking at the complete clinical picture, not a single result on a single day. Testing is selected based on your history, symptoms and risk factors, so not every man receives every test listed below.

  • Total testosterone
  • Free testosterone when indicated
  • SHBG
  • LH and FSH
  • Complete blood count and hematocrit
  • PSA when appropriate based on age and risk
  • Metabolic and lipid testing
  • Additional thyroid, endocrine, or metabolic testing when clinically indicated

Low testosterone levels are confirmed appropriately before treatment is initiated, and potential underlying causes are considered as part of the evaluation.

Treatment Options

The right treatment should fit both your physiology and your life.

There is no single testosterone protocol appropriate for every man. Treatment selection depends on your diagnosis, health history, preferences, lifestyle and response to therapy.

Testosterone Injections

Injectable testosterone, such as testosterone cypionate, is a commonly used option. Dosing and frequency are individualized to maintain an appropriate clinical response while minimizing fluctuations and adverse effects.

Transdermal Testosterone

Testosterone gels or creams may be appropriate for men who prefer to avoid injections. These require consistent daily application and simple precautions to prevent accidental transfer to partners, children or others.

Fertility Considerations

Testosterone therapy can suppress sperm production. Men who are actively trying to conceive, or who wish to preserve fertility, should discuss this before beginning TRT. When appropriate, other treatment strategies or referral for additional evaluation may be considered.

Safety & Ongoing Monitoring

TRT is ongoing medical care — not simply a prescription.

  • Testosterone levels
  • Hematocrit and hemoglobin
  • PSA when clinically appropriate
  • Metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors
  • Treatment response and symptom changes
  • Potential medication-related side effects

Treatment may be adjusted over time based on laboratory results, clinical response and your overall health.

The goal is not to chase a particular testosterone number. It is to use the lowest appropriate treatment needed to achieve a safe, meaningful clinical response.

When Will We Notice a Difference?

Improvement happens gradually.

Every patient responds differently. Some changes in sexual function, energy, motivation or overall well-being may become noticeable within the first several weeks to months of treatment.

Changes in muscle mass, strength, body composition and physical performance generally take longer, and are influenced by nutrition, activity, sleep, metabolic health and other factors in addition to testosterone.

Your progress is evaluated over time rather than judged by a single lab result or appointment.

What About Testosterone for Women?

Testosterone also has a role in women's health, but treatment and dosing are very different from male TRT. For select women, testosterone may be considered as part of a comprehensive hormone evaluation when clinically appropriate. Women's hormone therapy at Vital Haven Wellness is approached separately and considers the full hormonal picture, symptoms, medical history, risks and treatment goals.
